trump 2026: now with 30% more islamophobia

Donald Trump explains that democracy is working "too well" now that Muslims keep winning elections, surrounded by Republicans nodding along like stripping rights from entire religions is just another line item in the midterm strategy memo.

Donald Trump explains that democracy is working "too well" now that Muslims keep winning elections, surrounded by Republicans nodding along like stripping rights from entire religions is just another line item in the midterm strategy memo.

Tommy Tuberville took one look at Abdul El-Sayed winning a Democratic Senate primary and immediately decided Michigan had "just voted to send a TERRORIST" to Washington, because nothing screams national security expertise like Tommy Tuberville screaming on X in all caps. That set off a 1,900% spike in Islamophobic posts naming El-Sayed, as the GOP base reacted to the horrifying spectacle of a Muslim guy winning an election in a democracy. Donald Trump, never one to pass up a chance to punch down, called El-Sayed a "jihadist" from the Oval Office and warned that "jihadists" are being elected "all over the place" – which is an interesting way of describing Americans who win elections. JD Vance tagged along to call El-Sayed "very, very evil", while Ted Cruz, Nancy Mace, Randy Fine, and Andy Ogles took turns auditioning for a "Who Can Say The Most Openly Bigoted Thing On TV" competition. Mace declared that every Muslim in public office is a "trojan horse" and that Islam "must be removed from civil society in the US" – you know, just casual talk about religious cleansing from a sitting member of Congress. The hate isn’t just rhetorical; it’s metastasizing into policy cosplay. Greg Abbott is burning state time and money investigating private wudu stations at airports as illegal religious favoritism, while fighting a mosque-centered housing project like it’s an invading army instead of an apartment complex. Meanwhile, a "Sharia Free America Caucus" – yes, that’s a real thing and not a rejected Onion headline – has grown to 65 members, pushing bills against a made‑up problem they invented so they can heroically defend America from Muslims washing their hands. All of this is happening while Muslim representation in government hits historic highs, and hate crimes and discrimination stay permanently elevated. Researchers describe the rhetoric as "so bigoted" and "so crude" that the mask is basically off now. The GOP isn’t dog‑whistling anymore; it’s just standing on the Capitol steps with a bullhorn yelling that an entire religion is a national security threat. It’s not a culture war; it’s a slow‑motion campaign to define millions of citizens as enemies of the state.

trump beta-tested the presidency on nbc

Gene Folkes, still recovering from the time he mistook a TV game show sociopath for a business mentor, standing in front of buildings that have likely filed more lawsuits against Trump than he has functioning moral principles.

Before Donald Trump was using the Oval Office as a live-action rage-therapy set, he was workshopping the character on The Apprentice, where contestants like Gene Folkes learned the rules could change at any moment and the emperor’s wardrobe was mostly myth and bronzer. Folkes describes the full Trump starter pack: the fake titan-of-industry aura, the messy desk masquerading as genius, and the immediate realization that behind the bluster there was… not a lot of there there. The show also came with Trump’s signature HR policies: casual sexual innuendo about the women in the boardroom, treating contestants as disposable props, and deploying coded racism when a Black contestant’s vision problems during a task magically morphed into a narrative that he was basically illiterate. Folkes, a finance grad and former Air Force recruiter, watched Trump try to frame him as the "dumb person of colour" and realized this wasn’t just a TV villain; this was a man fundamentally incapable of empathy, especially toward anyone who wasn’t rich, white, and holding a checkbook. So yes, NBC spent years paying Trump to refine a persona built on humiliation, misogyny, and racial stereotyping, then America helpfully handed that persona nuclear codes and the Department of Homeland Security. The Apprentice boardroom was just the pilot episode; the presidency was the series order.

twenty-five years after 9/11 and islamophobia is somehow winning in overtime

A solemn 9/11 memorial, flanked by the invisible footnotes: twenty-five years of politicians using grief as a lifetime subscription to demonize Muslims.

Rozina Ali remembers her parents warning her on 9/11 that, as Muslims, they would now live under permanent suspicion. Two and a half decades later, she’s here to report that mom and dad were, tragically, policy analysts. Her work traces how multiple administrations took a national trauma and turned it into a bipartisan hobby: surveillance, secret lists, "random" screenings, and entire political careers built on fear of brown people with the wrong last name. The Trump years, of course, didn’t invent Islamophobia; they just ripped off the polite mask and slapped a "MUSLIM BAN" label on the machinery that was already humming along nicely. Ali explains how attacks on Muslims became so normalized that they seeped into every corner of American life – schools, workplaces, airports, law enforcement – until suspicion stopped being an emergency measure and became the operating system. Twenty-five years after 9/11, the question isn’t whether Islamophobia is at an all-time high; it’s how many politicians are still cashing in on it while insisting this is the land of religious freedom with a completely straight face. So yes, the war on terror may have faded from the headlines, but the infrastructure of fear is doing great. From the Patriot Act to the travel ban, from "counterterrorism" grants to campaign ads about "sharia law," the state spent decades teaching Americans that some religions come pre-loaded with probable cause. And now we get to live with the results: a country where Muslims are told they’re equal citizens, and also a permanent security risk, depending on which microphone a candidate is standing in front of.

make baseball white again, one tilted hat at a time

MLB umpire Doug Eddings bravely defends America from the existential threat of a slightly crooked hat.

MLB umpire Doug Eddings bravely defends America from the existential threat of a slightly crooked hat.

Major League Baseball is out here proving that while the calendar says 2026, the vibes are stubbornly stuck on 1926. Ronald Acuña Jr dares to enjoy a home run like a human being and suddenly Zack Wheeler and Don Mattingly are acting like he burned an American flag on the mound. Jazz Chisholm steals a couple of bases in a blowout and a Red Sox radio guy helpfully recommends that someone just drill a random Yankee as punishment. You know, the good old "unwritten rules" where someone has to suffer so white feelings can feel safe. Then we get the Doug Eddings experience: a veteran white ump stops the game to police Cardinals rookie Hancel Rincon’s hat angle — not a rule violation, just a violation of "his game" on "his field" — slaps the team with a time violation when the manager complains, ejects said manager, and then blows a call at the plate for good measure. The players of color are the problem, of course. The white guy melting down over millimeters of brim tilt? Just enforcing "tradition." Playing the game the right way turns out to be code for "stop acting Black or Latino where I can see you." And because this is Trump’s America, the culture war doesn’t stop at the foul line. When some players hijack Pride Night with Bible verses on their caps, MLB gives them a warning and suddenly the Department of Justice is threatening to investigate whether Christians are being oppressed by… being asked not to turn a league promotion into a homophobic sermon. So Black and Latino players get policed for joy, style and body language, while straight white grievance gets the full backing of federal law enforcement. If you were wondering what "Maga country" looks like in sports form, it’s umps losing their minds over tilted hats while the DOJ rushes to defend the real victims: guys whose religious freedom apparently requires publicly punching down on queer fans.

Trump officials proudly unveiling their new refugee policy flowchart, which is just a giant color wheel that stops at ‘eggshell’ and says ‘everyone else: deport.’

The United States used to resettle refugees based on need. Under Trump 2.0, the new metric appears to be Pantone swatch. In FY 2025–26, the U.S. admitted 10,258 refugees: 10,255 white South Africans and three Afghans who must have slipped through quality control. At the exact same time, the administration is cancelling Temporary Protected Status for 350,000 Haitians, parading them in shackles, and spending billions to arrest, detain, and deport Black and brown people — while quietly doubling refugee cash assistance to $4,500 a head for the new white arrivals.

Refugees from Syria and other war zones spent years begging for enough support to not immediately plunge into U.S. poverty. The answer was always "sorry, budget constraints." Then a planeload of white beneficiaries of South African apartheid shows up and suddenly the couch cushions are bursting with Welcome Money, TANF eligibility, Refugee Cash Assistance, and a fast-track to citizenship. TPS holders like Haitians — who pay taxes into a system they’re barred from benefiting from — get no welfare, no pathway to citizenship, and a one-way ticket back to danger.

This isn’t policy, it’s a racial sorting algorithm with ICE agents. TPS was always designed as a political cul-de-sac; now 1.3 million people are exposed to deportation and potential death while the administration hands out visas and beefed-up benefits to white South Africans like party favors. The supposed fiscal hawks have proven there’s no spending cap when the recipients are white and the victims are Black and brown. The message from the self-styled guardians of "law and order" could not be clearer: the law is for deporting you, the order is for keeping the checks flowing to people who look like them.

The Westwood Islamic Community Center, shown here in the traditional American style: serving a food pantry by day, cleaning up shattered glass and hate messages by night.

In Cincinnati, someone broke into the Westwood Islamic Community Center, trashed the place, stole equipment, and helpfully decorated a whiteboard with the word “die” and assorted profanity. It’s the third time the mosque and community center has been attacked in seven years, with previous visits featuring racist graffiti. Local police dutifully showed up, filled out the paperwork, and then apparently tossed the case into the same black hole where hate-crime investigations and ethics complaints go to die.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Donald Trump is busy explaining that “we have jihadists being elected all over the place,” casually borrowing the vocabulary of actual extremists while his party builds an entire electoral strategy on Islamophobia. A DC thinktank reports a twentyfold spike in attacks on Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, CAIR documents a nationwide surge in anti-Muslim incidents, and 65 members of Congress proudly join a “Sharia-Free America caucus,” because nothing says serious policymaking like legislating against imaginary law codes.

Federal law enforcement, allegedly tasked with protecting Americans from domestic terrorism, has instead cultivated such deep distrust that local Muslim leaders in Ohio don’t even bother calling the FBI anymore. They can list bombings, shootings, and multiple attacks on mosques—with no one charged and no meaningful follow-through. But sure, tell them again how this is all just about “national security” and not a government-sanctioned campaign to treat Muslim communities as acceptable collateral damage in Trump’s reelection fanfic.

state department discovers the real african victims: white afrikaners

The State Department, bravely standing up for the most marginalized people on the African continent: the heirs of apartheid.

The Trump administration looked at the entire African continent — poverty, conflict, HIV, democratic backsliding — and bravely concluded the top human rights emergency is: white Afrikaners. The State Department’s Democracy, Human Rights and Labor bureau, formerly known for things like, you know, opposing dictators, is now considering a $1 million grant for research on crime against South Africa’s white minority, conveniently aligned with an Afrikaner group whose founder calls for Afrikaner self-governance and wants to plant 3,000 white crosses on the National Mall. Apartheid architects as a protected minority: bold rebrand.

Meanwhile, Trump has been screaming about a supposed “genocide” of white farmers, using that fantasy to justify cutting off HIV treatment funding that actually saves Black South Africans’ lives, while fast-tracking white South African refugees after slamming the door on basically everyone else. Former diplomats are politely stunned that, amid real crises across Africa, Washington’s priority is underwriting the emotional support needs of a fringe, borderline white-nationalist movement — potentially through handpicked grants that duck competitive bidding rules. And for dessert, DRL is toying with funding a British group that defends gay conversion therapy and a project to boost "civilizational self-confidence" in wealthy European democracies. U.S. foreign aid has officially gone from fighting oppression to subsidizing the feelings of the global far right.

dems go shopping for 'authenticity,' come home with nazi tattoo guy

Amanda Litman, patiently explaining that maybe – just maybe – the guy with the Nazi tattoo shouldn’t get more benefit of the doubt than every woman and candidate of color in the party combined.

Democrats, still in therapy from Kamala Harris losing to Donald Trump, went hunting for that mystical creature called "authenticity" and somehow ended up backing Graham Platner: a white guy whose resume reads like a content warning. We’ve got racist, sexist, homophobic posts, a tattoo widely recognized as a Nazi symbol he later covered up, sexually explicit messages to women while married, and ex-partners describing toxic and threatening behavior. Yet the train kept rolling right along until a rape allegation finally made everyone pretend to read the file.

Platner still bulldozed a sitting governor out of the primary, hoovered up grassroots cash, and cruised to the Democratic nomination, because if there’s one bipartisan value left in American politics, it’s the unshakeable belief that white men are endlessly "redeemable" and everyone else is on zero-tolerance probation. As organizer Amanda Litman points out, women and people of color know one minor screw-up can end their careers, while guys like Platner get treated like the political versions of the Fyre Fest fraudster and Adam Neumann: serial disasters who keep getting handed new piles of money and trust they absolutely have not earned.

Black progressive Chris Rabb spells it out: a Black candidate with a comparably "problematic" tattoo wouldn’t just lose donors – they’d never make it onto the stage. But Platner? He became the great white populist hope until the allegations got too loud to ignore. So the party that says it wants diversity and justice keeps structuring the system so that the riskiest bet you can make is not on a guy with a Nazi tattoo, but on a woman or a person of color with an actual conscience. American democracy: where the bar for white men is in the basement and still somehow considered a ladder.

white house fight night: racism on the south lawn

UFC Fight Night at the People’s House, where the dress code is black tie and 4chan talking points.

UFC Fight Night at the People’s House, where the dress code is black tie and 4chan talking points.

For his 80th birthday, Donald Trump celebrated the dignity of the presidency by turning the South Lawn into a UFC-themed Facebook comments section. Fighter Josh Hokit grabbed the mic after his bout and used his big moment to recycle a far-right, racist, sexist, and transphobic conspiracy theory about Michelle Obama, yelling: “Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right, America?” Trump’s contribution to this historic moment was a helpful half-smirk and total silence, while parts of the crowd laughed like they’d just discovered YouTube in 2012. Even Trump allies are now gingerly suggesting that maybe, possibly, the president should denounce hosting open bigotry on the literal White House lawn. Dave Portnoy — who endorsed Trump — said this was the one thing that needed an immediate condemnation. Dana White, professional chaos merchant, managed to find the line and texted that he’s “completely against saying nasty and false things about people’s families,” which is a sentence no one expected to be the adult in the room. Meanwhile, Sunny Hostin and Robert Griffin III patiently explained that calling Black women “men” has a long, ugly history rooted in racism and misogyny, a history that was just treated as a punchline at a taxpayer-funded event. Not everyone on the right saw a problem, of course. Dan Bongino rushed in to declare it all just comedy and to accuse critics of “pearl clutching,” because when your guy is hosting racist smears at the White House, the real issue is tone policing. This all comes only months after Trump shared — then quietly deleted — a video depicting the Obamas as apes. The White House declined to comment, because why interrupt the message when the silence is doing such a fantastic job of telling you exactly where the presidency stands.

trump’s favorite refugees discover republicans also hate immigrants

Ohio Republicans bravely protect the homeland from the terrifying threat of refugee driver’s licenses.

Ohio Republicans bravely protect the homeland from the terrifying threat of refugee driver’s licenses.

Trump’s White House cooked up a bespoke refugee pipeline just for white South Africans and a few other “acceptable” minorities, then promptly boasted about it while freezing out places like Afghanistan and Ukraine. About 6,300 have arrived, with Ohio getting a few hundred new Afrikaners and a shiny press release about “revitalizing” a shrinking state. Then the GOP did what it does best: made their lives functionally impossible while insisting everything is fine. Ohio’s Republican legislature slapped non‑citizen residents with a byzantine, expensive new licensing regime – eight hours of lessons, 24 hours of classroom time, 50 hours of supervised driving, roughly $500, and up to nine months before you can legally drive to a food bank. Refugees, who get their federal cash assistance cut from 12 months down to four under Trump, are now crowdfunding rent, driver’s licenses, and rides to pick up donated groceries while state officials blandly insist they’ve heard of no “financial hardship.” Conservative influencers who cheered Trump’s whites‑only‑adjacent refugee program are suddenly discovering that the party of border walls and “learn English or leave” also doesn’t like their immigrants, either. Half the Afrikaners in Ohio are reportedly leaving the state over the driving rules, resettlement agencies are overwhelmed, and the South Africa‑based group tapped by the administration to run this whole thing refuses to answer basic questions while insisting the program is still “vital.” America First, refugees last – unless they’re useful for one more campaign video about “saving persecuted farmers.”

rubio discovers the 'easy-assimilating' refugee: they’re white

Marco Rubio, bravely explaining that it’s not about race while literally making it about race.

Marco Rubio, bravely explaining that it’s not about race while literally making it about race.

The Trump Administration has apparently solved the refugee crisis by the radical innovation of not admitting refugees and instead rolling out a special program for white South Africans. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, now fully evolved into his final form as a Heritage Foundation push notification, reassured Congress that this is fine because they supposedly "assimilate" more easily. By a wild coincidence, this new humanitarian priority just happens to exclude the overwhelmingly brown and Black people fleeing wars, famines, and dictators we helped arm.

Rubio’s “assimilation” line is the genteel Beltway version of saying the quiet part out loud: refugees are out, the right kind of immigrants are in. The administration has effectively turned U.S. refugee policy into a whites-only fast track while pretending it’s about culture, not color. Refugees from Syria, Sudan, or Central America get a closed door; white South Africans get a red carpet and a talking-point about how nicely they’ll blend in. America’s longstanding promise to protect the persecuted has been downgraded to a vibe check for maintaining the right aesthetic.

america first, refugees white

Lady Liberty, now holding a clipboard marked "whites only" and a Mar-a-Lago guest list.

Lady Liberty, now holding a clipboard marked "whites only" and a Mar-a-Lago guest list.

The Trump administration has discovered an emergency refugee situation: not the Afghans we abandoned, not Congolese or Sudanese civilians fleeing actual war, but white Afrikaners leaving a country where their unemployment rate is 12% compared with 48% for Black South Africans. The US will now boost white South African refugee admissions from about 7,500 to 17,500 this year, at a cost of $100m, after previously slashing the entire refugee program down to 7,500 total slots that were already earmarked mostly for them. Refugee policy has officially gone from “give us your tired, your poor” to “give us your lightly inconvenienced, but make sure they’re Dutch-descended.”

To sell this, the State Department is channeling Tucker Carlson fan fiction, warning of "escalating hostility" and government "race-based discrimination" against Afrikaners, while Trump keeps shouting about a debunked "white genocide" his own allies on the racist far right have been flogging for years. At the same time, the administration cut aid to South Africa, boycotted the G20 in Johannesburg, and then banned South Africa from this year’s G20 — conveniently being held at one of Trump’s Miami resorts, because of course it is. Foreign policy is now just a loyalty test crossed with a hotel rewards program.

South Africa’s unforgivable sin, according to Washington, includes raiding a US "refugee processing" center and deporting seven Kenyans who were working illegally — i.e., enforcing its own immigration laws, which you may recall is supposed to be sacred when done by white-run governments on Fox News. But when a Black-led government does it, suddenly it’s proof of anti-white persecution and grounds for an emergency airlift of people whose ancestors literally ran apartheid. The US went from resettling over 100,000 global refugees in 2024 to turning the program into a bespoke service for one favored white minority, while everyone else is told to enjoy the bombs, militias, and famine back home.

The State Department, seen here carefully aligning its messaging with the comment section of a neo-Nazi subreddit.

The State Department has apparently decided that if you can't beat the white nationalists, you might as well copy-paste their talking points into official U.S. diplomacy. Career diplomats who once talked about refugees in the language of human rights now get to workshop phrases from the Great Replacement conspiracy theory, the racist fever dream that claims shadowy elites are importing brown people to "replace" white Americans. Foreign ministries used to get cables about cooperation and security; now they’re getting the State Department’s version of a 4chan thread.

This is not just a bad look, it's state branding for xenophobia. When the government’s formal language on migration starts to echo the same narratives chanted by tiki-torch mobs and mass shooters’ manifestos, that’s not a dog whistle — that’s a stadium PA system. The Trump team has effectively turned U.S. foreign policy into a white grievance newsletter, broadcasting to the world that America’s diplomatic corps is now proudly fluent in racist conspiracy theory.

florida declares war on the nfl for the crime of interviewing black people

The NFL logo on a ref’s uniform, moments before Florida’s attorney general threw a penalty flag for excessive diversity on the field.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has decided that the biggest civil rights emergency in his state isn’t police brutality, housing discrimination, or voter suppression – it’s the Rooney Rule. Yes, the NFL’s 2003 policy that says, "hey, maybe at least interview a Black coach before you hand another job to your golf buddy" is now under investigative subpoena, because the MAGA braintrust has rebranded basic anti-discrimination guardrails as a woke dictatorship.

This is the same playbook used against colleges, corporations, and anyone else who dares acknowledge that racism didn’t retire in 1965 and move to Boca. Weaponize state power, scream "discrimination" on behalf of the overwhelmingly white ownership class, and try to turn civil-rights-style enforcement upside down: suddenly, attempting to correct decades of exclusion is the real injustice. The league that was dragged kicking and screaming into even pretending to consider Black head coaches is now being treated like the vanguard of radical DEI extremism.

So we’ve arrived at the point where a right-wing government is leaning on a private business to stop it from voluntarily interviewing minority candidates, because ideology demands that every system stay at its naturally segregated equilibrium. Call it what it is: state-sponsored backlash against any effort, however timid, to share power with the people who actually play the game. The message from Florida’s MAGA machine is clear: the only affirmative action they support is for white billionaires.

trump admin bravely takes on its greatest enemy: black history

The Trump administration, bravely standing up to the menace of schoolkids learning what the Underground Railroad was.

The Trump administration has apparently decided that the real threat to America isn’t, say, foreign adversaries or climate disasters, but a small Underground Railroad museum in Albany, New York, trying to teach kids that slavery happened. The Underground Railroad Education Center is suing after the National Endowment for the Humanities yanked a $250,000 grant, allegedly because the project had the wrong kind of history and the wrong color of people attached to it.

This all traces back to Trump’s 2025 executive order nuking anything that smelled like diversity, equity, or inclusion, which federal agencies then used as a shredder for about 1,400 grants. The lawsuit says the administration systematically went after programs that increased understanding of Black history and culture, while the current crop of executive branch geniuses pump out statements that lawyers politely describe as "overt and coded racism" in support of white supremacy. Subtlety has left the chat.

It’s not just this museum. A court already had to order the administration to restore a slavery exhibit in Philadelphia after it started sanitizing the President’s House Site like it was prepping a condo listing. They’ve also swapped out free national park days to dump Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, and launched a political review of Smithsonian exhibits to make sure they line up with Trump’s preferred fairy tale version of America, where racism either never existed or was extremely overblown by woke abolitionists.

Meanwhile, the Albany museum—housed in the former home of abolitionists Stephen and Harriet Myers, who helped thousands escape slavery—is stuck scrambling for funds because the federal government decided that accurately teaching Black history is now a partisan act. The grant was supposed to help build a $12 million interpretive center; instead, it’s become Exhibit A in the administration’s ongoing effort to put Black history back in the attic and padlock the door.

Community volunteers patrolling Chinatown because the federal government outsourced public safety to vigilante grandkids while the president workshopped new racial slurs on Twitter.

Trump spent 2020 workshopping racial slurs on live TV, calling Covid the “Chinese virus” and turning Asian Americans into walking bullseyes. Shockingly, when the president of the United States spends months doing open-mic racism at the podium, people start getting spat on, beaten in the street, and, in Atlanta, murdered. Out of that carnage came Stop Asian Hate, which documented nearly 13,000 incidents, pushed real money into victim support and education, and even got Asian American history into public school curricula — a radical move in a country where any non-white history is now treated as Marxist witchcraft. The movement managed to “galvanize political power” just long enough for the media to get bored and for the usual centrist brains to decide racism was a 2021 fad. Inside the AAPI community, younger organizers pushed for community-based safety while older elites reached for the classic American solution: more cops, more task forces, more carceral theater. NYPD rolled out an Asian hate crimes task force, celebrities offered cash rewards, and progressive organizers pointed out that putting bounties on Black and Brown men wasn’t exactly the solidarity arc they had in mind. Now we’re in Trump’s second, even more aggressively anti-immigrant administration, where the guy who helped supercharge anti-Asian hate is back in charge and doubling down on xenophobic rhetoric while pretending he’s the real victim. The Stop Asian Hate “moment” has faded, but the policies and the backlash he spawned are still here, colliding with a government that treats immigrants as a problem to be punished, not people to be protected. The movement is at a crossroads; Trumpism is not. It’s marching confidently forward, screaming slurs into a megaphone and calling it border security.

House security escorts Al Green out for the crime of holding a sign that says Black people are human, while the guy who shared the racist ape video keeps his primetime slot.

The Trump era keeps finding new floors to crash through. At Trump’s State of the Union, Rep. Al Green was physically removed from the House chamber for the radical, deeply disruptive act of…holding a sign that said, “Black People Aren’t Apes.” In case you lost track of the timeline of American decline, that’s a reference to the video Trump himself posted this month depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as cartoon apes. As Green was escorted out just minutes into the speech, he waved the sign toward the Republican side while Texas GOP Rep. Troy Nehls lunged to grab it away, because nothing screams "party of free speech" like trying to wrestle a sign that says Black people are human out of a Black man’s hands on the House floor. This is Green’s second year in a row getting tossed during a Trump address — last year it was for shaking his cane at the president. Trump, meanwhile, still hasn’t apologized for the racist video, instead offering the very statesmanlike defense that he “condemns its racist parts” after quietly deleting it. So to recap: the president shares a racist ape video about the first Black president and first lady, faces a mild scolding, deletes it, and keeps the mic. The Black lawmaker who responds by literally stating that Black people are not apes? He’s the one dragged out of the chamber. American democracy remains, technically speaking, a going concern; American dignity, however, has left the building.

Barack Obama on the campaign trail, still somehow expected to be the adult in the room while the current president is reposting Jim Crow memes from his state-sponsored burner account.

The Trump White House decided to honor Black History Month by sharing a video on the president’s official social media depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, set to The Lion Sleeps Tonight because racism apparently needs a soundtrack now. The clip was tacked onto the end of yet another lie-filled rant about 2020 "voter fraud," just to make sure the fascist nostalgia had both the Jim Crow visuals and the Big Lie plotline.

The administration’s first response was to sneer that the backlash was just "fake outrage" — always helpful when the government’s communications shop openly workshopped the talking points of anonymous racists on Telegram. Only after bipartisan condemnation, including from Senator Tim Scott calling it "the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House," did the story evolve into the classic MAGA Mad Lib: a staffer did it, it was deleted, and Trump "didn't see" the part where he shared a viral racist meme to millions of people.

Obama, because someone in this country still remembers how presidents are supposed to sound, told podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen that the real crisis is the total evaporation of shame and decorum among public officials. He described the whole thing as part of a broader "clown show" of cruelty and indecency that dominates social media and TV, while most Americans still cling stubbornly to basic human decency. The current president, meanwhile, is out here stress-testing how much open racism you can run through the official White House communications pipeline before the GOP finally decides that maybe the problem isn’t just the interns.

Jeremy Carl, a Claremont Institute fellow and former Interior official, is Trump’s pick for assistant secretary of state for international organizations — the person who would manage America’s relationship with the UN while publicly describing the Civil Rights Act as an “anti-white weapon” and musing about “white genocide”. Truly the perfect face of US multilateralism: a man who thinks Juneteenth is “race hustling and white-shaming” and that “self-hating white people” are “mentally ill”.

Carl’s online history is a greatest hits album of far-right grievance: pushing the “great replacement” conspiracy, declaring “we either win or die” about political opponents like Cori Bush, calling George Floyd a “thug” “looking up from hell”, and comparing Proud Boys seditionists to Black men in 1930s Mississippi courts — because nothing says "serious policy thinker" like equating accountability for an attempted coup with Jim Crow lynch justice. He also reportedly flirted with addressing the “Jewish question” and claimed Jews “love to play the victim”, but don’t worry, he later tried to mass-delete 5,000 posts and even scrub the Wayback Machine, because nothing screams innocence like frantically power-washing your own digital crime scene.

Democrats on the Senate foreign relations committee, shockingly, are not thrilled about sending a white supremacist-adjacent podcaster to represent the US to a planet that is about 93% non-white. Desirée Cormier Smith points out the obvious: it’s hard to “credibly engage” with diplomats from Africa, Latin America, Asia, or basically anywhere when you’ve built a career arguing they’re part of a plot to erase white people. Yet with Trump’s Senate already having rubber-stamped Pete Hegseth at Defense, RFK Jr at Health, and Kristi “Shoot-the-dog” Noem at Homeland Security, Carl might only be “a bridge too far” if one Republican suddenly discovers that openly racist, antisemitic, and homophobic tirades are slightly off-brand.

So as US global favorability plummets and alliances wobble, Trump’s solution is to nominate a man whose core message to most of the world is: you’re either a demographic threat or mentally ill. The job is "assistant secretary for international organizations"; the audition reel is "Claremont Institute YouTube comments section". If you were trying to convince the world that American democracy is circling the drain, you couldn’t design a better envoy.

trump posts racist obama ape video, gop voter finally notices racism exists

Trump, moments before insisting the racist video he personally posted somehow posted itself.

Trump, moments before insisting the racist video he personally posted somehow posted itself.

Trump shared a video on Truth Social depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, then had it yanked after backlash, like that somehow un-presses "post" on the sitting president’s racism. The White House initially defended it, because of course they did, and then a lifelong Republican named John from New Mexico called C‑SPAN to say he was shocked to discover the man who launched his career on birtherism is racist. Three elections and one ape meme later, the scales have fallen from his eyes.

Meanwhile, the same administration John helped vote in (repeatedly) has been busy harassing and arresting journalists, looting the office for an estimated $4bn in profiteering, gutting climate policy, and turning immigration detention into a catalog of deaths, physical abuse, and sexual assault. Add in the body count from Hurricane Maria negligence, Covid malpractice, junk science, and the dismantling of humanitarian aid, and you’ve got a government that treats human life like a rounding error on a golf bill.

The conservative brain trust, represented here by Ben Shapiro, openly concedes Trump’s flaws but waves them away as not "disqualifying" because Kamala Harris existed on the ballot. That’s the new standard: authoritarian corruption, lethal incompetence, and open racism are acceptable overhead as long as the vibes are right. And now we’re supposed to hand out moral participation trophies to folks who helped build this and only object once the president’s racism is too loud to ignore on their TV screen. Apologies are nice; accountability is nicer. Neither is currently in office.
