This isn’t policy, it’s a racial sorting algorithm with ICE agents. TPS was always designed as a political cul-de-sac; now 1.3 million people are exposed to deportation and potential death while the administration hands out visas and beefed-up benefits to white South Africans like party favors. The supposed fiscal hawks have proven there’s no spending cap when the recipients are white and the victims are Black and brown. The message from the self-styled guardians of "law and order" could not be clearer: the law is for deporting you, the order is for keeping the checks flowing to people who look like them.

The Trump administration looked at the entire African continent — poverty, conflict, HIV, democratic backsliding — and bravely concluded the top human rights emergency is: white Afrikaners. The State Department’s Democracy, Human Rights and Labor bureau, formerly known for things like, you know, opposing dictators, is now considering a $1 million grant for research on crime against South Africa’s white minority, conveniently aligned with an Afrikaner group whose founder calls for Afrikaner self-governance and wants to plant 3,000 white crosses on the National Mall. Apartheid architects as a protected minority: bold rebrand.

Meanwhile, Trump has been screaming about a supposed “genocide” of white farmers, using that fantasy to justify cutting off HIV treatment funding that actually saves Black South Africans’ lives, while fast-tracking white South African refugees after slamming the door on basically everyone else. Former diplomats are politely stunned that, amid real crises across Africa, Washington’s priority is underwriting the emotional support needs of a fringe, borderline white-nationalist movement — potentially through handpicked grants that duck competitive bidding rules. And for dessert, DRL is toying with funding a British group that defends gay conversion therapy and a project to boost "civilizational self-confidence" in wealthy European democracies. U.S. foreign aid has officially gone from fighting oppression to subsidizing the feelings of the global far right.

Democrats, still in therapy from Kamala Harris losing to Donald Trump, went hunting for that mystical creature called "authenticity" and somehow ended up backing Graham Platner: a white guy whose resume reads like a content warning. We’ve got racist, sexist, homophobic posts, a tattoo widely recognized as a Nazi symbol he later covered up, sexually explicit messages to women while married, and ex-partners describing toxic and threatening behavior. Yet the train kept rolling right along until a rape allegation finally made everyone pretend to read the file.

Platner still bulldozed a sitting governor out of the primary, hoovered up grassroots cash, and cruised to the Democratic nomination, because if there’s one bipartisan value left in American politics, it’s the unshakeable belief that white men are endlessly "redeemable" and everyone else is on zero-tolerance probation. As organizer Amanda Litman points out, women and people of color know one minor screw-up can end their careers, while guys like Platner get treated like the political versions of the Fyre Fest fraudster and Adam Neumann: serial disasters who keep getting handed new piles of money and trust they absolutely have not earned.

Black progressive Chris Rabb spells it out: a Black candidate with a comparably "problematic" tattoo wouldn’t just lose donors – they’d never make it onto the stage. But Platner? He became the great white populist hope until the allegations got too loud to ignore. So the party that says it wants diversity and justice keeps structuring the system so that the riskiest bet you can make is not on a guy with a Nazi tattoo, but on a woman or a person of color with an actual conscience. American democracy: where the bar for white men is in the basement and still somehow considered a ladder.

The administration has effectively turned U.S. refugee policy into a whites-only fast track while pretending it’s about culture, not color. Refugees from Syria, Sudan, or Central America get a closed door; white South Africans get a red carpet and a talking-point about how nicely they’ll blend in. America’s longstanding promise to protect the persecuted has been downgraded to a vibe check for maintaining the right aesthetic.

The Trump administration has discovered an emergency refugee situation: not the Afghans we abandoned, not Congolese or Sudanese civilians fleeing actual war, but white Afrikaners leaving a country where their unemployment rate is 12% compared with 48% for Black South Africans. The US will now boost white South African refugee admissions from about 7,500 to 17,500 this year, at a cost of $100m, after previously slashing the entire refugee program down to 7,500 total slots that were already earmarked mostly for them. Refugee policy has officially gone from “give us your tired, your poor” to “give us your lightly inconvenienced, but make sure they’re Dutch-descended.”

To sell this, the State Department is channeling Tucker Carlson fan fiction, warning of "escalating hostility" and government "race-based discrimination" against Afrikaners, while Trump keeps shouting about a debunked "white genocide" his own allies on the racist far right have been flogging for years. At the same time, the administration cut aid to South Africa, boycotted the G20 in Johannesburg, and then banned South Africa from this year’s G20 — conveniently being held at one of Trump’s Miami resorts, because of course it is. Foreign policy is now just a loyalty test crossed with a hotel rewards program.

South Africa’s unforgivable sin, according to Washington, includes raiding a US "refugee processing" center and deporting seven Kenyans who were working illegally — i.e., enforcing its own immigration laws, which you may recall is supposed to be sacred when done by white-run governments on Fox News. But when a Black-led government does it, suddenly it’s proof of anti-white persecution and grounds for an emergency airlift of people whose ancestors literally ran apartheid. The US went from resettling over 100,000 global refugees in 2024 to turning the program into a bespoke service for one favored white minority, while everyone else is told to enjoy the bombs, militias, and famine back home.

The State Department has apparently decided that if you can't beat the white nationalists, you might as well copy-paste their talking points into official U.S. diplomacy. Career diplomats who once talked about refugees in the language of human rights now get to workshop phrases from the Great Replacement conspiracy theory, the racist fever dream that claims shadowy elites are importing brown people to "replace" white Americans. Foreign ministries used to get cables about cooperation and security; now they’re getting the State Department’s version of a 4chan thread.

This is not just a bad look, it's state branding for xenophobia. When the government’s formal language on migration starts to echo the same narratives chanted by tiki-torch mobs and mass shooters’ manifestos, that’s not a dog whistle — that’s a stadium PA system. The Trump team has effectively turned U.S. foreign policy into a white grievance newsletter, broadcasting to the world that America’s diplomatic corps is now proudly fluent in racist conspiracy theory.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has decided that the biggest civil rights emergency in his state isn’t police brutality, housing discrimination, or voter suppression – it’s the Rooney Rule. Yes, the NFL’s 2003 policy that says, "hey, maybe at least interview a Black coach before you hand another job to your golf buddy" is now under investigative subpoena, because the MAGA braintrust has rebranded basic anti-discrimination guardrails as a woke dictatorship.

This is the same playbook used against colleges, corporations, and anyone else who dares acknowledge that racism didn’t retire in 1965 and move to Boca. Weaponize state power, scream "discrimination" on behalf of the overwhelmingly white ownership class, and try to turn civil-rights-style enforcement upside down: suddenly, attempting to correct decades of exclusion is the real injustice. The league that was dragged kicking and screaming into even pretending to consider Black head coaches is now being treated like the vanguard of radical DEI extremism.

So we’ve arrived at the point where a right-wing government is leaning on a private business to stop it from voluntarily interviewing minority candidates, because ideology demands that every system stay at its naturally segregated equilibrium. Call it what it is: state-sponsored backlash against any effort, however timid, to share power with the people who actually play the game. The message from Florida’s MAGA machine is clear: the only affirmative action they support is for white billionaires.

The Trump administration has apparently decided that the real threat to America isn’t, say, foreign adversaries or climate disasters, but a small Underground Railroad museum in Albany, New York, trying to teach kids that slavery happened. The Underground Railroad Education Center is suing after the National Endowment for the Humanities yanked a $250,000 grant, allegedly because the project had the wrong kind of history and the wrong color of people attached to it.

This all traces back to Trump’s 2025 executive order nuking anything that smelled like diversity, equity, or inclusion, which federal agencies then used as a shredder for about 1,400 grants. The lawsuit says the administration systematically went after programs that increased understanding of Black history and culture, while the current crop of executive branch geniuses pump out statements that lawyers politely describe as "overt and coded racism" in support of white supremacy. Subtlety has left the chat.

It’s not just this museum. A court already had to order the administration to restore a slavery exhibit in Philadelphia after it started sanitizing the President’s House Site like it was prepping a condo listing. They’ve also swapped out free national park days to dump Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, and launched a political review of Smithsonian exhibits to make sure they line up with Trump’s preferred fairy tale version of America, where racism either never existed or was extremely overblown by woke abolitionists.

Meanwhile, the Albany museum—housed in the former home of abolitionists Stephen and Harriet Myers, who helped thousands escape slavery—is stuck scrambling for funds because the federal government decided that accurately teaching Black history is now a partisan act. The grant was supposed to help build a $12 million interpretive center; instead, it’s become Exhibit A in the administration’s ongoing effort to put Black history back in the attic and padlock the door.
