trump’s primary circus: fake electors, crypto cash, and a surplus of maga

Republican candidates line up to prove who loves Trump, dark money, and alternative elector slates the most, while democracy quietly backs toward the exit.

Republican candidates line up to prove who loves Trump, dark money, and alternative elector slates the most, while democracy quietly backs toward the exit.

Democracy’s slow collapse has reached the product-testing phase, with Tuesday’s primaries serving as a focus group on how much authoritarian cosplay Republican voters actually want. In Georgia, Trump and Brian Kemp are fighting over which loyalist gets to challenge Sen. Jon Ossoff: Rep. Mike Collins, who’s under a House Ethics microscope for allegedly misusing congressional funds on a staffer and his girlfriend, versus football guy Derek Dooley, who promises to "work with President Trump" while being marketed as a political outsider by the literal sitting governor. Collins, ever the eager subordinate, brags about writing the Laken Riley Act — the first immigration-enforcement bill Trump signed in his second term — like that’s not a giant neon sign flashing "we’re legislating off Fox News segments now."

Meanwhile, the Georgia governor’s runoff is a contest between Lt. Gov. Burt Jones — who earned his Trump endorsement by serving as a fake elector in 2020 — and billionaire Rick Jackson, who’s spent over $100 million trying to buy the title of "Trump’s favorite governor." Kemp, term-limited and suddenly very into continuity, backs the fake elector over the "outsider" he claims to love so much in the Senate race, because nothing says "respect for elections" like promoting a guy who literally tried to nullify one.

Alabama looked at this mess and said: we can launder some money through it. The GOP Senate runoff to replace Tommy Tuberville is awash in nearly $7 million in ads, with Rep. Barry Moore boosted by a crypto-industry-linked super PAC and Club for Growth cash, all breathlessly touting Trump’s endorsement like it’s a warranty sticker. Moore is being hit as a "D.C. swamp king" accused of "stolen valor," while his opponent Jared Hudson brands himself a "warrior who will fight alongside President Trump" — because apparently the job description for U.S. senator now includes LARPing as a member of Trump’s personal Praetorian Guard. The throughline in all these races is clear: pledge fealty to Trump, shrug at ethics probes and fake-elector schemes, let outside money flood the zone, and then call it "grassroots."

homeland insecurity: dhs graduates from protecting elections to menacing them

Markwayne Mullin explains that, yes, the best person to safeguard U.S. elections is the guy who tried to overturn the last one.

Markwayne Mullin explains that, yes, the best person to safeguard U.S. elections is the guy who tried to overturn the last one.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin — a man who still thinks Venezuela stole the 2020 election despite Fox News paying $787 million to admit that was nonsense — is now in charge of "protecting" U.S. elections. What could possibly go wrong when the guy who tried to block certification on Jan. 6 is handed the keys to the election security apparatus?

Instead of partnering with states to secure the vote, DHS has become the thing election officials need protection from. Local officials across the political spectrum are refusing to share voter data or security information with the feds because they’re pretty sure Trump’s people will use it to target them or undermine any result Dear Leader doesn’t like. As one Republican former clerk put it, "They've brought the fox into the henhouse" — which is generous, since the fox usually at least pretends not to be holding a can of gasoline and a match.

Trump has already said he wants the federal government to "take over" elections, and his DHS point person for elections, Heather Honey, comes with her own greatest-hits reel of election disinformation. So the new model is simple: discredit past elections, install true believers like Mullin and Honey, then demand that states hand over the data needed to challenge or overturn future results. Call it election security the way arson is climate control.

America once worried foreign adversaries might attack our elections. Now the concern is that the Department of Homeland Security — led by a guy who helped feed the Big Lie and literally arranged conspiracy-briefings at Mar-a-Lago — is gearing up to do the job from inside the building. Mission accomplished.

turns out nonstop coup cosplay is bad for national pride

Steve Kornacki bravely explains, with charts, that years of coup cosplay, court-packing, and reality denial have somehow made Americans less proud of their country. Truly, a mystery for the ages.

Steve Kornacki bravely explains, with charts, that years of coup cosplay, court-packing, and reality denial have somehow made Americans less proud of their country. Truly, a mystery for the ages.

Steve Kornacki, America’s most overqualified human spreadsheet, reports that American pride is at an all-time low, driven by a "massive" partisan divide. Apparently, when one party spends a decade insisting the country is a satanic hellscape run by pedophiles and stolen votes, people don’t walk away humming "God Bless America." Who knew. Republicans, marinated in Trump’s permanent grievance tour, tell pollsters they love America but hate basically everything it does, while Democrats, after watching the Supreme Court auction off rights and Trump try to speedrun authoritarianism, are not exactly feeling the fireworks-and-apple-pie vibe either. The result: a country that still exists on paper, but whose citizens are increasingly split between "this system is rigged" and "this system didn’t rig hard enough." So yes, American pride is cratering. When your recent civic highlights include a president trying to overturn an election, a Supreme Court acting as a theocratic wrecking crew, and a political movement that treats democracy as an optional feature, it’s less "shining city on a hill" and more "condemned building with a giant TRUMP sign bolted on the front."

trump turns doj into his 2026 oppo research department

Donald Trump thoughtfully considers which political rival’s family members to subpoena next, in his ongoing remake of the Justice Department as a personal hit squad.

Donald Trump thoughtfully considers which political rival’s family members to subpoena next, in his ongoing remake of the Justice Department as a personal hit squad.

Gavin Newsom says the quiet part out loud: Donald Trump allegedly told his pet Department of Justice to go find a crime on him and, for good measure, on his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom too. Federal agents have reportedly been knocking on doors of family friends and former staff, Hoovering up records and "abusing the grand jury process" like it’s just another loyalty test at Mar-a-Lago. This isn’t some one-off tantrum; Newsom helpfully notes he’s merely the latest addition to Trump’s ever-expanding enemies list, joining James Comey, Letitia James, Tim Walz and pretty much anyone who’s ever said "no" to him. The alleged logic is simple: Newsom might run for president, he keeps calling Trump a liar, so obviously the next step is to sic federal prosecutors on his inner circle. Democracy, but make it mob movie. Newsom says he’s fair game but calls out the administration for probing his wife’s finances while right-wing media and GOP hopeful Steve Hilton brand the couple a "grifter family" for the crime of caring about equal pay and gender equity. So the Trump White House is reportedly using the DOJ to run opposition research on a potential 2028 opponent’s spouse while screaming about "witch hunts" into Trump’s own criminal cases. Truly a banner day for law and order.

white house discovers new national security threat: math

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei politely explaining math to a government that thinks 'jailbreak' is a classified program and not just people being better at prompts than the Commerce Secretary.

The US government has decided that Anthropic’s new AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, are so terrifyingly powerful that foreign nationals must be kept away from them like they’re the nuclear codes instead of glorified autocomplete. After getting "verbal evidence" of a supposed jailbreak, the Commerce Department — now led by Secretary Howard Lutnick, because of course the guy who turned bond trading into a blood sport is in charge of tech policy — effectively forced Anthropic to suspend access while refusing to explain anything in public. Anthropic is now being summoned to Washington to show its homework and beg for permission to turn its own tools back on, while the White House, Commerce, and the company all suddenly develop a convenient case of "no comment" syndrome. Tech security leaders from Nvidia, Zoom, Mercedes-Benz, and former government officials are reduced to writing open letters asking the administration to maybe try "an open, scientific and transparent process" instead of vibes-based national security panic. Meanwhile, the same government that wants to micromanage AI usage is already being sued by Anthropic over how its models can be used by the Pentagon, because nothing says responsible governance like secret restrictions, power plays, and policy made via rumor.

trump declares war, unfortunately on west oakland’s lungs

Myrtle Street, West Oakland, 1963: back when the neighborhood only had regular systemic racism, and not a federally turbocharged coal export terminal on top.

Myrtle Street, West Oakland, 1963: back when the neighborhood only had regular systemic racism, and not a federally turbocharged coal export terminal on top.

Donald Trump has discovered a bold new use for wartime powers: not to respond to an actual war, but to funnel $700m in taxpayer cash into dying coal projects, including a $75m coal export terminal in West Oakland. Because when you think "national defense", you obviously think "let’s dump more coal dust on a historically Black neighborhood already choking on pollution". The Defense Production Act was apparently not available for pandemics, infrastructure, or climate resilience, but it’s wide open for propping up Utah coal barons and one very lucky developer with a long-stalled scheme. West Oakland, a community with a legacy of Black organizing from the Pullman Porters to the Black Panthers, also has the legacy America actually funds: redlining, toxic waste under homes, and childhood asthma courtesy of free-market exhaust. The city literally banned coal storage a decade ago, residents have been fighting this terminal for years, and the project’s been tied up in lawsuits. So naturally, Trump’s response is to ram it through by declaring it a pseudo-military priority and trying to break ground this summer, over the clear objections of local officials and communities who, according to the administration, have made the fatal mistake of being both liberal and alive. Developer Phil Tagami originally said he wasn’t interested in coal, then flipped the moment Utah showed up with a deal to ship its fossil trash overseas. The project stalled in court, but Trump’s DPA cash drop is the resurrection spell. As California assemblymember Mia Bonta points out, this move "sentences West Oakland… to generational harm" – which, in Trump policy terms, reads like a feature, not a bug. Environmental justice groups are scrambling to respond while the federal government uses emergency powers as a personal coal stimulus package, turning a long-running local land-use fight into a national case study in how to weaponize the state against communities that refuse to quietly inhale and die. So to recap: wartime powers, no war; "defense" spending, no defense; massive public subsidies, no public benefit – just another day in Trump’s fossil-fueled experiment in how far you can stretch executive power to own the libs and poison their kids at the same time.

the algorithm will see you now (but you can’t see it)

White House tech bros proudly unveiling the new "Ask No Questions" AI platform, now with 70% more unaccountable decision‑making.

White House tech bros proudly unveiling the new "Ask No Questions" AI platform, now with 70% more unaccountable decision‑making.

The Trump administration quietly dropped a little 3,611-item surprise on GitHub: a federal AI use-case inventory that reads like a brainstorming session between Philip K Dick, George Orwell, and a Palantir sales rep. AI is now being used or planned for everything from scanning HHS grant applications for ideological purity, to routing new inmates into higher-security prisons based on "potential for misconduct", to eavesdropping on veterans’ crisis calls so a machine can decide how suicidal they sound. Meanwhile, the State Department killed off an AI project meant to forecast mass civilian killings, because obviously the one thing this government decided was too much was trying to prevent atrocities.

The best part? You’re not really allowed to know what any of this actually does. The official disclosures are mostly one-line descriptions with the informational value of a DMV receipt, public consultation is basically nonexistent, and the "high impact" label that’s supposed to trigger extra scrutiny is applied so inconsistently it might as well be assigned by dartboard. Agencies can quietly hand sensitive decisions over to opaque systems while the accountability layer consists of: hope, vibes, and the OMB CIO’s GitHub. But don’t worry — there are 70 AI translation projects at CBP now, so when your rights are being trampled at the border, at least the machine misunderstanding you will do it in your native language.

What we’ve got is a textbook Trump-era governance model: automate power, obscure responsibility, and pretend the main issue is "innovation" rather than a sprawling, barely-audited infrastructure for soft authoritarian control. AI could help democracy, sure. Instead, this crew is speedrunning the "black box bureaucracy" level, where an unaccountable state can shrug and say, "the algorithm made us do it" while quietly rewriting what due process and civil liberties mean in practice.

JD Vance, pausing between memoir sales pitches and loyalty check-ins with Trump, thoughtfully considers whether to run for president in the post-democracy era.

Vice-president JD Vance has announced that he’ll decide whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 midterms, following a serious family conversation with his wife Usha and a less-serious reality show conversation with Donald Trump. He insists he doesn’t sit around plotting a White House run, which is adorable coming from a guy doing a book tour about his religious awakening while floating his presidential ambitions on national TV.

Vance says Trump will be "very supportive" of whatever he decides, which is a polite way of saying that the future of the Republican party will once again be determined by whatever mood the octogenarian strongman is in when Fox & Friends ends. He claims he never brings up 2028 with Trump, but says the president talks about it "a lot"—publicly and privately—because of course the man who tried to overturn an election is "very fascinated" by who gets to sit in his old chair next.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports Vance may delay deciding because his fourth child is due in July, reminding everyone that the would-be heir to Trumpism is busy expanding both his family and his political brand. On the shortlist of other 2028 hopefuls: Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Donald Trump Jr, because nothing says "healthy democracy" like a dynastic primary between the son, the courtier, and the guy who converted to Catholicism and to Trumpism with the same fervor.

trump’s tariff tantrum ends in refunds and yawns

Trump gazes at a tariff chart like it’s Excalibur, while small business owners quietly file for refunds in the background.

Trump’s big, beautiful global tariff crusade has officially completed its journey from "historic realignment of world trade" to "line item on your accountant’s refund worksheet." After the Supreme Court ruled that His Majesty illegally abused the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, businesses are literally lining up for their money back while the White House quietly pretends this was all part of the plan. The so‑called "king" tried to rule by decree, and the courts responded with a very polite, very legal "absolutely not." Now he’s rolling out a fresh batch of 10–12.5% tariffs on 60 countries under Section 301, allegedly over forced labor, but small businesses mostly greet the news with a shrug and an eye roll. They’ve seen this movie: Trump announces sweeping imperial economic edicts, judges strike them down, refunds eventually dribble out, and the only real winners are consultants who get paid to explain the latest chaos. The president will keep insisting that "trillions" in investment, soaring manufacturing, and every uptick in GDP are the divine fruits of his tariff genius, while business owners quietly factor in court challenges as just another cost of doing business in Trump’s America. Meanwhile, the political class is busy arguing over who defeated the pretend monarch harder—Trump bragging about economic "wins" that mostly came from AI and datacenters, Democrats promising to reverse his damage once they get the keys back, and future heirs to the throne like JD Vance and Marco Rubio trying to decide how much cosplay-authoritarianism they’re willing to commit to. Out in the real world, however, tariffs have become background noise: a short‑term nuisance that will likely be undone by the next administration. For all the royal posturing, the system still occasionally works, which is why small businesses now treat Trump’s tariff stunts less like a serious policy regime and more like a recurring software bug in American democracy.

the donald dash: when your best citizens nope out

Artist’s rendering of American democracy: an airport departure board packed with one-way flights to anywhere with functioning institutions.

Artist’s rendering of American democracy: an airport departure board packed with one-way flights to anywhere with functioning institutions.

The Trump administration has finally found an immigration policy that works: driving Americans out of America. As Republican legislatures carve districts so aggressively that whole liberal neighborhoods basically vanish on paper, actual people with pro-democracy values are vanishing in real life too. At least 180,000 Americans voluntarily left in 2025, EU inflows are at record highs, and DHS proudly reports 2.2 million "self-deportations" – which now apparently includes U.S. citizens leaving with their undocumented family members. You know your democracy is thriving when the census starts to look like a before-and-after ad for authoritarianism.

The people heading for the exits aren’t random. They’re younger, more educated, more open-minded, and more committed to liberal democratic institutions – exactly the folks you’d want around when a twice-impeached, multiply indicted strongman is busy kneecapping checks and balances, gutting reproductive rights, and shrugging off sexual misconduct allegations against his pals. Women 15–44 are leading the Donald Dash, with 40% saying they’d move permanently if they could, while billionaires shop for golden passports and scientists ship their lab coats to countries that still fund research instead of culture wars.

Combine that with collapsing net migration, record numbers dreaming of leaving, and scholars of authoritarianism literally relocating as a group, and you get a neat feedback loop: the more Trump erodes democracy, the more the people most likely to fight back leave – which makes it easier to erode democracy further. It’s like gerrymandering the electorate by convincing your opposition to emigrate. The U.S. isn’t just losing brainpower; it’s bleeding out its democratic immune system, one visa application and Irish ancestry form at a time.

trump wins big among people who think america is doomed

Trump contemplates how to make America great again while 56% of voters conclude that ship already hit the iceberg.

Donald Trump has finally unified the country: across parties, races, and ages, a majority of Americans now agree the United States is headed straight into the dumpster. The new NBC/More Perfect poll finds 56% of registered voters think America’s best years are behind it and nearly 80% say the American Dream is harder to reach than a Trump tax return. So yes, the self-described master dealmaker has apparently negotiated us down to collective pessimism and vibes-based decline.

Politically, Democrats hold a modest 5-point edge on the generic congressional ballot, which counts as a landslide in a system gerrymandered to within an inch of its life. Trump’s approval is down to 42% among registered voters — 39% among all adults — with independents bolting and young and Latino voters who flirted with him in 2024 now filing for a restraining order. Republicans are still mostly clinging to Dear Leader, but GOP approval has slid since March, suggesting that even some MAGA die-hards are starting to notice that four more years of chaos, corruption, and fascist fanfic might not be the path to national greatness.

Meanwhile, confidence in the federal government and Congress is circling the drain, which is what happens when one party spends a decade insisting that government is evil and then proves it every time they get the keys. So Democrats have a small but real advantage, Trump’s numbers are rotting like a Mar-a-Lago buffet shrimp tray, and the electorate is depressed, exhausted, and convinced the future is worse. Truly, the perfect environment for a man whose entire brand is selling grievance, fear, and gold-plated failure.

80 candles, 0 shame: the global roast of president for life, guy who won't leave

Cory Doctorow, one of the few people capable of sending a birthday message that doubles as an indictment of American empire and a tech-sector obit.

Cory Doctorow sends Donald Trump an 80th birthday card that doubles as a geopolitical autopsy report. He politely thanks "Comrade Trump" for doing more than any US leader to blow up the dollar’s dominance, shove countries off fossil fuels, and convince entire continents that maybe letting American tech oligarchs run the internet was a terrible idea. The takeaway: Trump promised to make America great again and instead became the world’s most chaotic retirement planner for a post-American century. Stellar work, if your campaign slogan is "MAGA: But For China and the EU".

Then Piers Morgan shows up to polish the Dear Leader’s portrait. He lovingly recites Trump’s greatest hits: shot, prosecuted, impeached twice, divorced twice, financially face-planted, lost power, clawed it back, and is still somehow stomping around the White House like a particularly vindictive mall Santa. Morgan calls it "extraordinary resilience"; everyone else might call it a living indictment of a political system that cannot eject a man who keeps failing upward through every guardrail of democracy. At 80, Trump is being toasted by admirers and roasted by critics, but the real punchline is that the rest of the planet is now building parallel financial, energy, and digital systems just to survive the next time America elects a reality TV arsonist.

trump discovers 'national security' is the ultimate ai jailbreak

Anthropic executives onstage, blissfully unaware that the real 'alignment problem' is with a government that thinks due process is optional DLC.

Anthropic executives onstage, blissfully unaware that the real 'alignment problem' is with a government that thinks due process is optional DLC.

The Trump administration has decided that if anyone is going to jailbreak advanced A.I., it’ll be them. Late Friday, the White House ordered Anthropic to cut off access to its newest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all customers just to block foreign users, citing some vaguely described "jailbreak" method that supposedly lets people bypass safety features. Anthropic complied, because when a government that treats the Constitution like a Terms of Service popup says "jump," you at least pretend to read the fine print. What makes this extra elegant is that Trump was bragging about his "hands-off" approach to A.I. regulation earlier this month. Now his team is yanking the plug on a nearly $1 trillion company’s flagship products with a mystery directive that doesn’t bother to explain the actual national security threat. Former officials and cybersecurity experts are, shockingly, confused by the idea that the way to handle a potential exploit is to nuke global access and hope everyone applauds. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has already labeled Anthropic a "supply-chain risk" and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hopped on X to crow that the Department of War (yes, they’re calling it that now, because subtlety is for democracies) banned Anthropic from the building months ago. So the message to the tech sector is clear: build powerful tools the regime might want, accept military integration on their terms, and pray you don’t get publicly kneecapped the next time someone in the West Wing needs a tough-on-AI sound bite. Regulatory capture? That’s cute. We’ve moved straight to regulatory retribution.

Patriotic onlookers gather to watch workers perform the rarest of Washington rituals: removing Trump’s name from something instead of slapping it on like a branding rash.

The Kennedy Center spent the night getting an emergency decontamination, as workers quietly pried "The Donald J Trump and" off the facade like a bad tattoo you got during a four-year blackout. This followed a federal judge ruling that Trump’s little rebranding exercise was, minor detail, illegal, because Congress named the place for John F. Kennedy and you actually can’t just Sharpie your own name over history because your hand-picked board clapped for it. Trump, having already staged his own arts coup in February by firing all 18 Biden-appointed trustees, installing loyalists, and crowning himself chair, also wanted to close the Kennedy Center for two years of "renovations"—presumably to add gold toilets and a mandatory standing ovation for Dear Leader. Judge Christopher Cooper blocked that too, and then rejected a last-minute emergency appeal by Trump and his new pet board to keep his name bolted on a building he doesn’t own. The Department of Justice, now moonlighting as Trump’s signage protection service, argued that removing the name might be inconvenient if they somehow win on appeal, then pivoted to blaming thunderstorms for missing the deadline. The crowd outside was not buying the weather-based authoritarianism extension request, chanting "Shame!" and "Take it down" as workers, under tarps and cover of darkness, restored the words "John F. Kennedy" to the building and briefly, briefly, to American reality.

Screengrab of the president’s new favorite genre: drone strike snuff film, now streaming exclusively on Truth Social.

Donald Trump hopped on Truth Social to announce that, at his personal direction, US Southern Command carried out a "swift and lethal kinetic strike" to kill Héctor "Niño" Guerrero Flores, a leader of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. Along with the statement, he helpfully posted a video of the strike, because nothing says "constitutional republic" like the president posting kill shots as social content while declaring the gang "one of the most bloodthirsty Terrorist Organizations on Planet Earth".

Trump bragged that the operation was coordinated with "our friends in Venezuela," a fun new label for the same regime he spent years depicting as a narco-dictatorship, and which the US just physically removed Nicolás Maduro from in January to face US drug charges. He’s been insisting for months that Tren de Aragua operated under Maduro’s control, a claim a declassified US intelligence assessment contradicted, but why let your own intelligence community ruin a good foreign-army-at-the-border narrative?

In between flexing about drone strikes and terrorism charges, Trump used the announcement to smear Joe Biden as the man who "opened our Southern Border to millions of Illegal Criminals" and "allowed this foreign army" to terrorize Americans. He name-checked two murder cases involving undocumented immigrants as political props, just to really drive home that every national security decision is now also a Fox chyron. Meanwhile, the guy who just ordered a cross-border killing and then turned it into campaign content has nominated the same US attorney who prosecuted Tren de Aragua, Jay Clayton, to be director of national intelligence. So yes, the intelligence community is now being staffed by the president’s favorite character witnesses for his next episode of America’s Got Airstrikes.

Spencer Pratt, fresh off losing an election he insists he totally didn’t want anyway, announces he’s now at war with both democracy and campaign finance law.

Donald Trump’s favorite Los Angeles cosplay candidate, former reality TV villain Spencer Pratt, has conceded the LA mayor’s race and immediately pivoted to the post-democratic influencer phase of his career: declaring “war” on the two actual candidates who advanced. Despite Trump loudly insisting the race was “rigged” and “crooked,” Pratt conspicuously did not contest the results, presumably because even he couldn’t sell that script without laughing.

Instead, he announced he’s ditching those pesky “campaign laws” and moving into a more "interesting phase" where he can, as he put it, wage war without being “hamstrung.” He’s teasing supposed secret recordings that could force one of the “exalted candidates” — Karen Bass or Nithya Raman — to resign in shame, because nothing says “public servant” like openly bragging you were sitting on blackmail material for maximum political leverage.

Pratt, a registered Republican trying to win in deep-blue LA with Trump’s endorsement and zero governing experience, somehow lost to an actual city councilmember and the sitting mayor. Now he’s promising to keep “exposing this corrupt machine,” sneering that they can enjoy their “worthless meetings at city hall,” and escalating the rhetoric all the way to: “If you want to stop me, you’re going to have to fucking kill me.” Trumpism has reached its logical endpoint: failed candidates turning their campaigns into permanent revenge content channels, treating democracy as just another season of The Hills — but with more threats and fewer writers.

trump discovers best way to fix the numbers is to delete them

Census Bureau headquarters, where statisticians are informed that the best way to protect privacy now is to stop producing useful statistics.

The Trump administration has finally found a way to stop inconvenient facts from hurting Republicans at the ballot box: just make the facts disappear. Commerce dropped a new order banning the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using long‑standing “noise infusion” techniques that protect people’s privacy while still letting the public see detailed data. That leaves two options: blur the numbers into useless mush or don’t release them at all. Take a wild guess which way this is going. Instead of modern privacy methods, Team Trump is forcing “coarsening” — stripping out neighborhood‑level detail so aggressively that data for small counties, rural areas, and minority communities may simply vanish from public statistics. The very numbers used for redistricting, resource allocation, and research into inequality get gutted, while the administration pretends this is about protecting privacy. Former Census chief scientist John Abowd politely translated the order as: your 2030 redistricting data is going to be so degraded most mapmakers can’t use it. So on one hand, you have a legal requirement to keep respondents anonymous. On the other, you have an administration that’s allergic to any data that might document racial disparities, rural poverty, or partisan gerrymandering. The solution they landed on is elegant in its nihilism: if detailed numbers create accountability, then detailed numbers must die. It’s not voter suppression if you just erase the voters from the statistics, right?

trump admin bravely punches down at homeless people, again

Scott Turner heroically defends taxpayers from the grave threat of poor people having roofs over their heads.

The Trump administration has discovered a bold new strategy to fight homelessness in Los Angeles: take away the money that keeps people housed. HUD, led by Secretary Scott Turner, abruptly suspended federal funding to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) over alleged fraud and mismanagement, proudly declaring that taxpayers will no longer bankroll the "homeless industrial complex". Only minor detail: those funds currently help keep actual human beings in housing, but sure, let’s do performance accountability politics on the backs of people sleeping in cars. Local officials have been openly critical of LAHSA for years and have already yanked hundreds of millions in local money while building new oversight structures. But while Los Angeles is trying to reform a flawed system without tossing tens of thousands of vulnerable people into the street, Trump’s HUD has chosen the "publicity first, lives later" model. County supervisor Lindsey Horvath called the move a stunt; Mayor Karen Bass warned people will literally lose their lives; and Nithya Raman pointed out that this is exactly what she’d feared: the feds using funding as a political cudgel while pretending it’s about good governance. This latest hit fits neatly into the administration’s broader "California punishment tour", where high-speed rail, sex education programs, and public universities have all watched their federal support get kneecapped whenever Trump doesn’t like how the state behaves. Los Angeles has actually managed to reduce homelessness for two years running, but that apparently counts for less in Washington than Trump’s long-running feud with California Democrats and the city’s voters refusing to elect his preferred reality TV mayor. Nothing says "serious about results" like sabotaging the city that’s finally bending the curve down, then blaming them for the fallout.

trump declares iran war 'over', american hostage somehow still in prison

State-of-the-art U.S. hostage policy: let them plead for help on cable while the president declares mission accomplished.

State-of-the-art U.S. hostage policy: let them plead for help on cable while the president declares mission accomplished.

An Iranian-American journalist is begging for his freedom from an Iranian prison while Donald Trump is on TV insisting the U.S.-Iran war is basically a historical reenactment that already wrapped. The administration is busy selling a not-quite-finished memorandum of understanding as a world-historic peace deal, but somehow hasn't managed the advanced diplomatic maneuver known as "getting our citizen out of jail."

The White House line is that everything is fine, the war is over, and this agreement is a triumph. Meanwhile, the actual human being at the center of this is reduced to pleading through NBC cameras because the president is more focused on victory laps than on hostages. A functioning government might treat wrongful detention as a crisis; this one treats it as background noise in the Trump Show.

So we get the usual split-screen: on one side, Trump declaring total victory and waving around paperwork; on the other, a journalist rotting in a cell, hoping the guy who keeps saying it's all solved might eventually remember he's still there. American power, redefined as a press conference and a shrug.

primary voters compete in 'who can be more trump' contest

GOP candidates lining up to prove who is the most aggressively pro-Trump, like a talent show where the prize is control of a state government and the talent is authoritarian boot-licking.

GOP candidates lining up to prove who is the most aggressively pro-Trump, like a talent show where the prize is control of a state government and the talent is authoritarian boot-licking.

Republicans in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina are heading into runoffs where the core issue is not "policy" or "governing" but which candidate can cosplay as the purest vessel of Donald Trump’s ego. In Alabama, Rep. Barry Moore has the official Trump blessing, but his opponent Jared Hudson is branding himself as a "warrior for President Trump’s America First Agenda," because nothing says independent legislative branch like promising to be a loyal infantryman in the president’s personality cult. Georgia’s GOP is running its own experiment in late-stage democracy, where Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, armed with a Trump tele-rally, faces billionaire Rick Jackson, who has spent over $90 million of his own money to tell voters he is basically Trump, but with a fresher warranty. South Carolina rounds it out with Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and AG Alan Wilson both citing their devotion to Trump, Wilson bragging about defending the president’s agenda in court as if the job description for state attorney general is "personal legal bouncer for the White House." Trump, for his part, waves away his rare Iowa endorsement loss by claiming he wasn’t given the "proper information" and that the winner was "much more Trump" anyway. So the message to Republican voters is clear: elections are no longer about ideas, competence, or even basic sanity — they’re about choosing which ambitious climber can most convincingly promise to help one man cling to power. Representative democracy has been replaced with a casting call.
